SYNWORLD playwork:hyperspace (27-31 May 1999. It will deal with

have any ideas or actively involved in this field, please inform us about

Public Netbase is running an Unreal server, a highly popular 3D first

SYNWORLD
is an interactive exhibition which invites the public to discover, explore
and play with the newest virtual game worlds and simulations in electronic
entertainment, art, science and industry.
The multidimensional representation of complex structures and content is
of
central importance to the world of tomorrow. Increasing data capacities of
digital applications require new interfaces for spatial navigation within
complex environments and new approaches to information architecture.
Educational games and productive work as games will acquire increased
importance in the media hybrids of the future.
The latest developments in hypermedia worlds and computer-aided
simulations
confront us with divergent future scenarios:
Will inventive design in simulations lead to new worlds of experience?
Will
simulated cities as dynamic models of urban planning allow for new forms
of
human interaction?
What is the appeal of computer and video games? Can the fascination with
computer games be applied to learning and work environments?
Artists are increasingly occupied with the use of hypermedia narrative
structures, the design of participatory virtual environments, and the
technologies of complex systems.
SYNWORLD presents an exhibition featuring the works of important artists
working in these fields.
With presentations from exhibitors and games from numerous fields of
applications such as high-tech entertainment, science and art, SYNWORLD
appeals to a youth-oriented and a broader public and an audience of
specialists.
SYNWORLD's lecture series invites participants from industry, research and
the arts to discuss the implications of virtual systems of representation
and to hypothesize future scenarios.
SYNWORLD is organized by Public Netbase, The Institute for New Culture
Technologies in Vienna, in cooperation with the Architektur Zentrum Wien,
under the auspices of the Austrian Chancellorship and the City of Vienna.
Program:
The exhibition is open from May 27-31, 1999, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
daily.
The detailed symposium and educational program will be available as of
March 1999.

Switch is the new media art journal of the CADRE
Institute of the School of Art and Design at San Jose
State University. It is published on the Web three

We are interested in fostering a critical viewpoint on

New Centre, Third Way

Gerhard Schrder's victory in the German elections suggested that
good news might be at hand: the end of our winter of
neo-liberalism, to be replaced by a spring of social democracy. A
"neo" socialism is on the way - remodelled, neo-Labour and
neo-Keynesian. However, it is not a new left. What it calls itself
is a Third Way (in the UK) and a New Centre (in Germany). Leaving
aside national differences and variations, this Third Way or New
Centre is turning its back on classic social democratic policies
and any sort of neo-Keynesian model.

Closet reformism in the UK

Eighteen months after Tony Blair brought an end to almost two
decades of "New Right" Conservative government, it is gradually
becoming apparent that "New Labour" is not quite as new as the
British prime minister and his allies would like us to believe. As
the rhetorical dust has settled, we are seeing modest debts being
paid to Labour's social-democratic traditions but no repudiation of
the Thatcher legacy. Blair insists this combination is vindicating
evidence of the Third Way fusion of social-democracy and liberalism
that he is determined to bring about. But whether such a concoction
can survive the pressures of the next few years is another
question.

sitting in a discreet Capetown building trying to uncover the
secrets of the apartheid regime's covert programme of chemical and

referendum on self-determination; the last one was narrowly
defeated in 1995. But if he carries on with economic policies as
conventional as those of the federal government, he will have a
hard time convincing the electorate that a sovereign Quebec is

In the night of 9 February 1998 a hit squad opened fire with
machine guns and grenade launchers on a main street in the old
quarter of Tbilisi. The target was Eduard Shevardnadze. The
Russians were the immediate object of accusations - later
withdrawn. What Mr Shevardnadze is actually facing is a resurgence
of the problem of the Mingrelians, the great losers in the history
of the South Caucasus. But that is not to say that Georgia does not
have problems with its other regions too.

VRML.ART expo.

The VRML.ART expo features the ideas and independent creations in VRML
>from artists, and Web VRML design from commercial designers. It shows
the status of VRML based visual work done private, in companies and in
schools.
Art Schools and Art departments in Universities are teaching students
VRML based visual work, commercial companies and institutions are
starting to implement 3D objects (in their 2D Web
representation) and artists are using VRML technology to express
artistic ideas and in communication environments.
The VRML.ARTexpo will be presented online, and also featured in a
gallery installation at the VRML99 conference. Works will be juried
by Karel Dudesek, Director of VGTV Labatories and Kathy Rae Huffman,
Independent curator and Associate Professor of Electronic Art,
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, N.Y.

ENTRY RULES:
Please specify the category, and provide a URL, title of project,
contact name, address, telephone, FAX, and email address.
Online submissions:
Submission authorizes linking to your 3D site if selected. Online works
must run on max.150 MHz. Please specify CPU power and OS which your work
is tested on.
CD ROM submissions:
Test CD ROMS before sending, please specify CPU power and OS, which your
work is tested on.
Works with loading problems, or alert messages on VRML dashboard will be
automatically eliminated. Return of CD ROMs not guaranteed.
In recognition of the growing number of student sites and VRML activity,
ALL student works that load properly will be included in the special
VRML-student gallery. Class compilations are encouraged, with name of
professor, list of students, school and course title included.

When I talked to Valery Grancher about this idea just quizz as artwork,
I have no idea how quizz can be artwork. So I was trying with no
confidence.
But I was thinking , if artwork is different from craftwork, it's in the

I was thinking about Caravaggio's doughting St.thomas or Abbas
Kiarostami's
amazing films.
And it seems to me that many interesting works in the web happen around

Particularly I was thinking about the relation between media and question

For me, she is trying this difference movie/web . So she lost idea of
